The ability to walk without pain is something most of us rarely think about. For millions of people around the world suffering from severe arthritis and joint disease, however, that simple freedom has been taken away.
A hip or knee replacement—routine in the United States—can mean the difference between a life of disability and the ability to work, care for family, and live independently. Yet for many patients in developing countries, these life-changing procedures remain completely out of reach.
Our team of volunteer and highly specialized orthopaedic surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and therapists from the world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery is dedicated to providing free joint replacement surgery to patients who otherwise have no access to this care. Hospital for Special Surgery is the #1 orthopaedic hospital in the world and is in the unique position to provide care for these patients with often complex and debilitating problems. In June 2026, we will undertake our first medical mission to Antigua, Guatemala, where we will perform life-restoring hip and knee replacements for patients who have often lived for years with debilitating pain.
Equally important, we work side-by-side with local surgeons and medical teams—sharing expertise and building lasting partnerships that strengthen orthopaedic care long after our mission ends.
To help support this effort, we formed the Operation Walk NYC Bike HSS team.
Your generosity will directly fund surgical implants, operating room equipment, and the medical supplies necessary to provide these procedures completely free of cost to the patients we serve.
For each patient, the ability to stand and walk again is nothing short of life-changing that would not be possible without Operation Walk.
I hope you will join us in supporting Operation Walk NYC!
