ABOUT THE AWARDS

HSS Visionary Award

Presented to Patty and Jay Baker in recognition of their extraordinary commitment to advancing clinical care, research, and education at HSS. The Bakers have had a transformative impact on spine care through the Patty and Jay Baker Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Program, which includes the world’s first chair in minimally invasive spine surgery, training visiting fellows and summer interns, and supporting a team of researchers that generate discoveries that have resulted in over 200 published articles. In addition, underscoring their dedication to their community, the Bakers have been instrumental in forging the partnership between HSS and NCH, which brings the highest-quality orthopedic care to Naples and Southwest Florida. With the HSS Visionary Award, it is our privilege to honor the Bakers’ leadership and legacy that will impact patients for generations to come.

HSS Research Excellence Award

Presented to Mary (Peggy) K. Crow, MD, Physician-in-Chief Emerita and Benjamin M. Rosen Chair in Immunology and Inflammation Research, in recognition of her prolific scientific contributions to advancing the understanding and treatment of lupus and rheumatic diseases. Dr. Crow’s landmark research on the role of type I interferon as a critical disease mechanism in lupus was instrumental to the development of new FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of this condition. She has dedicated her illustrious career to improving the quality of life of patients through leading-edge research that has profoundly shaped the field.

Philip D. Wilson Jr., MD, Teaching Award

Presented to the late Howard Anthony “Tony” Rose, MD for his outstanding commitment to resident education. Dr. Rose made an indelible mark on HSS over his 27-year career as an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon, caregiver, teacher, and friend. He embodied the highest standards of medical excellence and human compassion. A pillar of the HSS family, he was beloved by his patients and revered as a mentor and role model by countless trainees, many of whom serve as leaders in their specialties today. Dr. Rose’s legacy will continue to shape our institution and the field of orthopedics for years to come.
